Glimpse of Alaska Tour

Crafted with the economic traveler in mind, our Glimpse of Alaska Tour provides 1 adventure-packed day of off-the-beaten path exploration in and around the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Led by our local Alaskan guides, you’ll visit Anchorage, Wasilla and Matanuska-Susitna Valley.

Glimpse of Alaska Tour features glacier trekking, panoramic views of the Chugach Mountain range, a dog-led sled ride, the opportunity to learn about Athabaskan traditions and Orthodox culture, and the chance to witness an abundance of wildlife including Dhall sheep, eagles, and moose.

Unwind with this compact, 1-day tour where your comfort and safety is our priority.

Morning - - Eklutna Historical Park:

The village of Eklutna provides visitors with a cultural opportunity to learn about the Russian Orthodox Church and its influence on native Alaskan culture. From the onion-shaped domes of New Saint Nicholas Church to the vibrant swaths of color speckled across the Athabaskan spirit houses, nowhere else does secular religion blend with native tradition in this way. As one of the oldest inhabited areas of Anchorage, archaeologists suggests that the park is over 800 years old, providing you with an opportunity to share in centuries of cultural tradition.

Noon - - Chickaloon & Matanuska Glacier:

Travelling north to the Matanuska Valley, tundra-covered lowland along the Knik Arm and the Palmer Hay Flats provide an abundance of wildlife viewing opportunities, from eagles and ptarmigan to moose and bear. The scenic drive to Chickaloon provides views of iridescent glacial waters, dense pine thickets, snow-coated mountain ranges and colossal granite spires as the mountains soar towards the clouds.

Upon reaching Matanuska Glacier, glacial streams, ice pools, towering moulins and deep canyons are some of the sights you’ll experience on your 3 ½ hour hike across the glacial face. You’ll have the rare opportunity to gain first-hand insights into glaciology, geology, and natural history across the 27-mile long river of ice, flowing from the Chugach Mountains north to the Glenn Highway. Complimentary ice cleats and walking sticks for your ease of use will be provided.

Afterwards, enjoy lunch at a locally-renowned wilderness lodge with panoramic views of the Chugach Mountains. Keep your eyes open for the chance to witness an abundance of wildlife including Dhall sheep, eagles, and ptarmigan.

Afternoon - - Wasilla & Iditarod Race Headquarters:

Wasilla’s Iditarod Race Headquarters is an Alaskan heritage and cultural sight. Historically renowned for its role as a trade and delivery route, this was once Alaska’s lifeline to medication, supply and post from the mainland. Today,Iditarod Race Headquarters maintains the tradition of mushing with the annual Iditarod Sled Dog Race.

You’ll have the rare opportunity to meet an Iditarod musher and dog team, after which you’ll experience a real dog-sled ride around a quarter acre track. Gain first-hand knowledge of the life of a musher, the team he calls family, and tales of the lone trail nights from Anchorage to Nome.

To round out your time at the Iditarod Race Headquarters, a short film of the history and legacy of the Iditarod Race is provided. Afterwards, you’ll return to Lake Lucille’s B & B to end your day.
